Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS), established in 1946, is one of the oldest medical universities in the country. Shiraz University of Medical Sciences was originally established as a "Health Institute for Higher Education". The institution was converted into a Faculty of Medicine in 1949. "Nemasi Higher Medical Institute" and School of Dentistry were established in 1954 and 1970 respectively. Later, other schools were gradually designed.

All public higher education schools (medical and non-medical) in Shiraz were initially under the auspices of the University of Shiraz - formerly "Pahlavi University". In 1986, medical science education in Iran was taken over by the "Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education" to promote health and medical teaching and research with the aim of making the most desirable use of national medical resources. As a result, all medical faculties and centres continued their activities under the new affiliation; "Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS)". However, non-medical programs are still offered under the supervision of Shiraz University.

Shiraz University of Medical Sciences (SUMS) not only trains students in medical fields but also manages all public hospitals, clinics and health centres in Fars province in southern Iran. The private sector of the health system in Fars is also under the supervision of SUMS

SUMS has more than 900 faculty members and more than 25000 employees working in various fields including health, treatment, research and education. Currently, more than 9000 students are studying in various academic fields in SUMS schools and research centres. Iranian students are recruited to SUMS through the National Entrance Examination (Konkur), whereas non-Iranian international applicants who wish to apply to SUMS must apply online after our A-Z program list.
