The Caldicott Principles, named for Dame Fiona Caldicott, are a set of ethical principles governing the use of personal health information in the UK. The principles state that patients have a right to know who has access to their health information, why it is being shared, and how it will be used.
The principles were first articulated in 1996 and were later revised in 2007. They have been widely adopted by both the public and private sectors in the UK. In 2013, they were adapted for use in the US healthcare system.
