Bald Head Island is located where the treacherous sand bars of Frying Pan Shoals first emerge and then retreat into the Cape Fear River. Hence, the name “Bald Head.”
The island was the location of a British fort and hospital in the Revolutionary War, and during the Civil War several Confederate gun emplacements helped secure the mouth of the Cape Fear River and the vital port city of Wilmington. Today, the octagonal lighthouse called “Old Baldy” is the oldest continually operating lighthouse in North Carolina and was commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson in 1817. The lighthouse is open for tours.
Kayaking
The pristine creeks and salt marshes of Bald Head Island offer visitors a unique perspective of the area’s flora and fauna. The BHI Conservancy offers guided kayak tours of these tidal creeks during high, low and mid tide for a one-of-a-kind experience. Guests can also paddle independently with kayak rentals from local clubs such as Coastal Urge and Riverside Outdoor Recreation.
Kayaks are available for all skill levels, and experts will help you find the right fit for your needs. These trips allow you to get up close to herons, egrets and other birdlife as well as marine life.
With only 200 year-round residents, the island is a retreat for vacationers and locals who prefer a quieter beach experience. Its limited population and world class amenities make it a popular destination for families with young children and retirees. Its beauty and pristine beaches make it a popular spot for golfing, fishing, tennis and croquet. Its natural wonders are complemented by a host of luxury hotels and restaurants. The island also boasts a limited number of prestigious homes.
